The focus of our work will partly depend on the electoral cycle of member states and also on national and international political developments. Political analysis can predict areas of possible democratic upheaval and try to prepare for the eventuality of intervention, but it is also difficult to predict the exact timing of likelihood of such events. Because of this we remain flexible to respond to the political uncertainties of the situation, when coups, unrest, and other unforeseen events require flexibility of action and quickness in response.
Democracy is also supported through the placement of democracy advisers, who are key to the effort to deepen democracy in member countries over the long-term. In addition we promote best practice and strengthen democratic values through workshops, seminars, conferences and publications, such as the ‘Government and Opposition – Roles, Rights and Responsibilities’ series of workshops.
