Kamalesh Sharma to address four major conferences in India on the need for collective action to resolve global economic crisis

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has arrived in India for a week-long visit from 4 to 11 February 2009 where he will address four international and local audiences, focusing on the current global economic situation, and the pressing need for reform of international institutions and collective action by all governments
The Secretary-General is also scheduled to call on the Minister of External Affairs, Pranab Mukherjee.
On 5 February, the Secretary-General will address the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry on ‘India and the Commonwealth: A Transforming Partnership’. On the same day, he will also be talking to the Association of Indian Diplomats on ‘Managing Change and Diversity in a Compacting World’.
On 6 February, Mr Sharma will speak at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit on the role of multilateral institutions such as the Commonwealth in enhancing sustainable development. He will also address RIS (Research and Information System for Developing Countries), an organisation that is marking its 25th anniversary by looking at the international global economic downturn and associated efforts to reform international financial institutions.
The Secretary-General will visit the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Asia Centre in Chandigarh on 9-10 February, where he will launch the Commonwealth Asia Regional Workshop on Youth and Peace-building. The workshop will bring together 30 young people from Commonwealth Asia to discuss ways in which they can contribute towards conflict prevention and resolution, and peace-building in their communities and countries.
Mr Sharma will visit the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, which is a CYP partner in offering scholarships to young and talented Commonwealth students to undertake tennis training and academic study in Chandigarh. He will also see the Commonwealth Youth Programme Technology Empowerment Centre (CYPTEC) on Wheels project which provides computer training to young people in communities throughout India, using a van equipped with computer workstations.
