Youth Association of Zambia Pledges to Impart ICT Skills in Youths

12 November 2008

The Youth Association of Zambia (YAZ) is an organization that aims to empower young people.

On 21st October 2008, the organization received 10 computers from FAIR International of the Netherlands through Evelyn Hone. YAZ will use these computers to help take ICT's to rural areas through work and study camps that the organization holds in different areas of the country.

The organization also intends to open a free ICT Library at YAZ offices for high school students where they can come and do their research as well as learn more on how to use the open source software Ubuntu which is an easy software to operate. Through these ICT programmes, YAZ hopes that more young people will become more computer literate especially those that are marginalized and have no opportunity to access computers.

It was further suggested that these computers will be used to sharpen young people's ability to new technological challenges in the area of ICT. YAZ also intends to source more computers and connect them to internet so that young people can get connected and share information with others globally. We hope to reach to 250 young people who will be able to understand and operate computers and successfully know how to use the internet by the end of 2009.

YAZ empowers young people through its various Programmes and activities. These include International Youth Exchange Programmes, Work and study camps, Long and Medium term Volunteer placements, Building Local democracy projects and Youth Business Development and provision of seed money.
