The Commonwealth Youth Credit Initiative (CYCI) in Namibia has scored many success stories. This is according to a report by a delegation from the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport & Culture and the National Youth Council of Namibia which recently visited the Commonwealth Youth Programme Regional Centre for Africa (CYP RCA).
CYPRCA began the roll out the Commonwealth Youth Credit
initiative (CYCI) in the African Region in 2001, following the completion of
the pilot phase in 2000. The delivery of the CYCI has involved different
approaches and delivery methods in the various implementing countries.
The programme which utilizes an integrated development approach by working
with governments, partner organizations, the private sector, civil society,
youth structures and young people themselves was implemented under a pilot

According to Mr. Patrick Haingura, Director of Youth Development and head of
delegation he Government of Namibia has decided to roll - out the programme
from the initial four regions of the pilot phase to all the thirteen regions of
the country, which will run for a period of five years (2007-2012).
Mr. Haingura mentioned that since the implementation of the CYCI
approximately over 2000 young entrepreneurs have been trained and about 1500
loans have been disbursed resulting in more than 2000 self employed jobs
created. “The Scheme has potential if well supported, I wish to pay tribute to
the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) for driving the Commonwealth Youth
Credit Initiative.” he added.
Ms. Zite Augusto of the Namibia Youth Council said that it would be of
greater benefit if the jobs created could employ others. She added that the
National Youth Council hopes to build linkages with other Youth Councils in the
region with a view of establishing exchange programmes aimed at building capacity
of young people so that they may contribute to national development and upgrade
their skills and add value to their products.
The delegation lauded CYP Africa’s efforts in creating an enabling
environment for young people and at the same time empower them to responsibly
and meaningfully participate in key spheres of national development.
