Official logo and website for CHOGM 2011 unveiled

25 September 2010

The Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, and Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma today unveiled the official logo and website for the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Perth, Australia, from 28 to 30 October 2011.

CHOGM is held every two years and is the highest consultative and policy-making mechanism of the Commonwealth.

The new logo will be the symbol that welcomes Commonwealth leaders from around the world to Australia next year for this major international event.

The logo was developed by local Perth-based design agency BrainCELLS and created with the host city and host country in mind.

The Prime Minister congratulated the local Western Australia-based agency on such a unique and innovative logo.

The shape of Western Australia is used in the logo as flags around the globe to represent the many different countries of the Commonwealth set to meet under the Southern Cross in Australia.

The colours selected also represent Australia’s diverse landscape – from the coast to the bush and its vast desert sands.

The official CHOGM 2011 website, http://www.chogm2011.org/, will also go live today, to provide attendees with the latest information, news and updates as the event continues to evolve over the course of the next 12 months.

With the event due to attract as many as 3,000 attendees the website will become an important information resource for visitors from near and far, as well as the general public.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General welcomed the unveiling of the logo and website.

“The website will be a magnet for those wanting to know more about the Commonwealth and more about the summit of our leaders in Australia, where the great global challenges of our time will be discussed,” the Secretary-General said.

“The logo reflects the diversity, liveliness, unity and global perspective of our Australian hosts, like the Commonwealth itself,” he added.

“CHOGM is the opportunity for Commonwealth leaders to discuss the national and global challenges of our times, to exchange views and best practice, and to find paths to peace and prosperity for all,” the Secretary-General said.

“We look forward to another successful Commonwealth summit in Australia in 2011,” he said.

Mr Sharma noted: “In this interconnected world, it is essential that we use all available means to be in contact and discussion with each other. We must make the best use possible especially of the power and potential of the internet; the CHOGM 2011 website will help achieve that goal.”

Leaders will focus on a wide array of issues of collective interest to all nations of the Commonwealth.
