The Commonwealth Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Guyana, Sir Paul Reeves, met with youth leaders from various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils on the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara on 14 July 2005 in Georgetown, Guyana.

The meeting with the young community leaders took place during Sir Paul's visit to Guyana from 11 to 16 July 2005, where he met the President and leaders of the Opposition, Members of Parliament and representatives of various political parties, and the Ethnic Relations Commission.

During his talks with the youth representatives, they discussed issues such as unemployment and the lack of opportunities to land jobs in their preferred fields of interest and capabilities.

Community leader Leanna Damon said: "My job does not relate to the degree I hold in economics. While I would like to pursue a job in my area of study, I am faced with the decision of either taking a job which does not pertain to my field of study or to remain unemployed."

The upcoming General Election in Guyana was also discussed. The youth leaders expressed their desire for greater social cohesion and harmony within the communities and society in their country.

Sir Paul told the youth representatives: "I hope that you continue to be committed to making positive changes in your communities and country as a whole. The Commonwealth Secretariat is committed to working with the various political parties to promote political stability so that issues of young people can be addressed."
