Turning the World Upside Down

Lord Nigel Crisp, Independent crossbench member of the House of Lords and specialist in international development and global health will address Commonwealth Health Ministers on 16 May in Geneva on 'Strengthening Health Systems'.

According to WHO, there are six essential elements for strengthening health systems: service delivery, financing, governance, health workforce, information systems and supply management.

He will argue that the world’s richer countries can learn from key developments in poorer countries and that co-development (mutual learning between countries and their development partners) would benefit everyone.

In addition, Lord Crisp will maintain that strengthening health systems ‘is a waste of money and effort’ unless continuous improvements are built in.

He has called his paper ‘Turning the World Upside Down’ because the arguments above challenge some of the most common assumptions about strengthening health systems in developing countries.
