There is an urgent need to focus resources on reducing maternal mortality, where it can have the biggest impact.

A paper from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, will argue that Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG5) can be met if all women deliver with a skilled health professional.

Skilled care will be most cost-effective when provided in functioning health facilities and must reach the poorest women, say the authors.

The paper, commissioned for the Commonwealth Health Ministers' Meeting in Geneva on 16 May looks at indicators in Commonwealth countries.

It argues that failing to achieve MDG5 will be discreditable for both rich and poor countries.

This paper will be available on 17 May 2010.
